Aspen trees have, for thousands of years, played an important role in Indigenous peoples’ everyday life. These trees are used for firewood in their teepees (it did not spark) and the powdery bark of the aspen provided sunscreen to the traditional keepers of these lands.
Aspen also provides shelter to ungulates, are great spots for small nests, and provide shade for plants like cow parsnip, allowing it to thrive. Let’s not forget the shade they provide us when we are out on the trail!
