Fescue grasses have long root systems, which are able to handle severe winds and store water for long, dry southern Alberta summers. They are incredible carbon storers too – storing more carbon than some full-grown trees! Their stems provide food year-round (they keep their nutrients in the winter) for birds and ungulates like deer, moose, and cattle. A single fescue grass can live over a hundred years! Yet once destroyed, they are nearly impossible to bring back.
The next time you see these grasslands, recognize them for what they are – amazing!
