It was made from sand that was cemented together millions of years ago. Due to the quarrying of sandstone, it is largely responsible for the creation of the Town of Glenbow that once sat in our Park!
Beginning in 1907, Glenbow sandstone was quarried for many buildings in Calgary, such as the new Courthouse, City Hall, and its Land Titles Office. Within a couple of years, the quarry was working around the clock to produce stone for the Alberta Legislature Building. Quarry workers and their families lived in tents and shacks at the Glenbow townsite. A school, store, post office, and grain elevator were built nearby, but when the quarry closed, the town was abandoned, and it was deserted by 1927.
